The donkey and the angel were in the donkey's stall.
The angel told the donkey, "Don't be afraid at all."
God has made you the chosen one to carry the mother of his son. The donkey hung his head and cried. He hated to leave his mother's side.
"Little one," she said, "You must be strong. Your journey will be hard and long. When your trip is done this very night, you will see a wondrous sight! You have been picked above the others to safely carry our savior's mother. The true God of animals and man has touched you with his very hand." His mother nuzzled him behind the ear. "Now go on, get out of here. You must remember all you see and bring the story back to me."
The little donkey stood up tall and marched himself outside the stall. The night was clear, quiet and still. The donkey left to do God's will. The blessed Mary climbed on his back and gave him a gentle pat. She leaned down by his face and said, "Just keep up a steady pace. You and I are chosen ones. We both carry God's own son." The donkey bowed his head to pray, "God, please help me find my way."
As he walked on through the night, God sent a star with a brilliant light. There was a crowd of people all around, when they reached Bethlehem town. Mary rubbed the donkey's head. "Thank you little one," she said.
He went to the manger out in back. He ate and stretched out to take a nap. When he woke up, things were wild! Mary was about to have the child. Inside the inn there was no space so they brought her to this lowly place. In that crowded manger, Christ was born among the strangers. Wise men came with gifts of joy, and gave thanks for heaven's boy. Th humble child that was born that day would wash all our sins away.
The little donkey headed home that morn and told everyone God's son was born. "I had no gift for him," he told his mother in the stall. "You gave of yourself," she said. 'That's the greatest gift of all."
