Masquerade
The little girl tried on her ballet shoes Danced away her eight year old blues. With the fairies she danced away To where the pain would vanish all day.
The look of innocence truly a mask She’d smile alright but it was such a task. For below the blonde and blue eyed charm This little girl was scarred with harm.
When the sky was dark and the footsteps near She’d put on her ballet shoes with cheer, Take her mind to a safer place So she couldn’t see his grotesque face.
When the pain took hold and the silent tears Fell onto her pillow for all those years, She’d withdraw to her place where fairies danced, They’d hold her hand while the unicorns pranced.
Trust grew scarce and confidence waned, But life in a masquerade was gained. A different mask in a play years long, Was worn while sadness remained her song.
Some are born to take cover with drugs Or turn to crime, end up as thugs. This little girl had children of her own And a seed of change was gently sewn.
Love was given and care was shown And now that seed of love has grown. She keeps the mask though just in case She has to hide the old sad face. I have to apologise for the dark stuff right now, this is how I cope. Sorry. K x

Kerry, so long as this darkness on paper helps relieve the darkness in you, then I say bring it on. This is a haunting and powerful write. Before meeting some of my good friends at TPS, with you being one of them, I was the only person that I knew to part-take in a "masquerade" so to speak. I think that this poem speaks for many of us troubled souls, in our own way. I'm sorry I'm just rambling now... I think that this is a beautiful piece of writing and I'm bookmarking this one.

Now we know why she wears a mask. How sad.

there are so many young children who go through this everyday and they think they are alone but they are not, Kerry, as you have penned words they can identify with. You are one incredible survivor and your past will help someone else's future, you just wait and see.
always yours,
Daniel
