The Trader let his eyes wander upwards to his gift high above the alter, A tax deducted insurance for the after life Noonday sun nudged aside an errant cloud Bursting rays of dappled gems of colour Lighting the chancel and the font ~ The congregation, friends and enemies Wives and other men’s wives Raised their heads as one Holding tight to their expensive millinery From the plate glass window, Christ smiling, bearing a child in his arms A white child ~ On the dry African scrub plains The Trader had bestowed another gift Not accepted yet, but waiting Days of rain brought life to the wilderness Flowers bloomed, joyous in fragmented beauty The small girl gathered them to her print dress A flash of peacock blue beckoned her ~ The priest called for the baby Pressing closer, the Trader looked down at his grandson The small girl reached for the perfect bloom Holy water anointed the infant child Blood baptised the African veldt

Gosh Cari this really touched y heart. A very clever write which clutchess at the soul of the reader and draws goosebumps. A sad but true tale here deptcting greed and innocence, then combining them with fatal results. Exalt Kerry xx

I agree what depth and imagery you paint in this deep yet inspiring write. I wonder what influenced such feelings inside you to write such beauty of innocence and wonder! This is a brilliant write! Exalt!

I can't get over how chilling this is. The dichotomy between the children marks a stark world, and the title has such irony. It's like I'm looking halfway across the world and back 30 years in time . . .
