A steady gait with shoulders relaxed; she watched him walking down the street from a few blocks away. He looked neither to the left nor to the right, that had to be a good sign. The way he carried himself said he knew what he wanted and didn’t need any distractions.
There was something gentle in his eyes, despite the hard expression on his face. His jaw line rippled with every step as if the vibrations traveled from his feet and made their way to his face, as if they were trying to erase his chiseled features.
“Isn’t he just delicious?” the voice of her friend broke her concentration and only then did she realize she had been staring.
“He is, absolutely. And to think – we haven’t met.” She said, almost to herself. She glanced over at her friends who were also seated on the bench and smirked. As he crossed the street to the block they were on, she crossed her legs and turned her attention back to him.
“Go for it.” They goaded her on, only increasing her confidence. She smirked, half-drunk on the thought of a new challenge, another chase – a hunt.
He was almost close enough to hear them now, though he never gave the impression that he’d noticed they were even there. It was clear he had somewhere to be and wasn’t going to just stop because she looked cute. Sensing that, she stood as he walked pass their bench and waved discreetly to her friends. His pace was surprisingly faster than it looked and she almost had difficulty keeping up with his hurried pace.
“Where to?” If she hadn’t been watching his face intently she would have missed both his calculative glance and subtle nod that said ‘follow’. He wasn’t talkative – not that she’d thought he would be.
He would only give one word answers to the questions she asked. But even his cold behavior and the awkward silences weren’t enough to faze her.
He began to slow down as they neared a building that was brimming with life and energy. The music pounding on the inside walls seemed to crawl through every opening in the building and make its way into the streets, enchanting passers-by. It wasn’t like any place she’d ever been but she didn’t walk away just yet. He paused, however, outside the door.
He looked at her, his eyes subtly asking questions he didn’t know how to voice, “Why did you follow me?” and “You came this far... are you coming in?” He watched as her lips curled into a smile of amusement and confidence. He offered his arm and looked ahead as she rested her hand in the crook of his elbow. In that moment he decided that she amused him, putting such a brave front despite the tension and hesitation she was no doubt trying to hide.
He had presented her with a challenge when he offered his arm. One he doubted she would refuse considering the fact that she had followed him this far – she didn’t. He opened the door with his free hand and she did the same and they entered the club-styled restaurant.
The moment they stepped in there was an eruption of applause mingling with voices and a few people shouted ‘Happy Birthday’. He smiled and nodded as a few of them came up to him, but didn’t say anything. No one asked who she was.
“About time you showed! I was beginning to wonder if you’d forgotten your own birthday party!” a man bounded from the crowd of people and moved in between them, draping his arm around the shoulders of the man she’d come with. He was like a bundle of energy, completely opposite to his friend.
“I should introduce myself, since Seth is too rude to do it himself.” He turned to her now and offered his hand. “I’m Alex; Seth’s best friend, and best everything else. Isn’t that right?” He laughed, turning back to Seth.
“It’s a wonder you can bear the burden.” Seth laughed and she smiled. Alex turned his attention back to her.
“And what might we call this lovely young thing?” his flattery made her giggle and her eyes wrinkled at the sides.
“Jasmine” She shook his hand gently, or rather, he shook hers.
“Jasmine... interesting name, it suits you. So how long have you known Seth?” Alex gave her his full attention. Though it didn’t make her uncomfortable she wasn’t sure what it would make Seth think of her. She had to be careful if she wanted him to think of her as more than just a random girl.
“We just met, really.”
“Oh?” He glanced over at Seth with an amused, teasing look in his eye. Seth didn’t ignore him but didn’t respond to him.
“Interesting. There aren’t many girls who would stick around Seth. He’s a bit... odd.” Alex said, smirking.
“Really, Alex? You’re trying to steal her away when you don’t even know her last name?” Seth chipped in. He looked amused, like this was the usual for them. They seemed like the types who could go from joking to fighting in an instant and Jasmine wasn’t sure which she was witness to at the moment.
“You’re one to talk. Tell me; what is her last name, Seth?” Alex smirked. “I doubt you know it either.” Jasmine chuckled, watching them. They seemed to get along but they spoke as if they couldn’t stand each other. It was all in their smiles, their eyes; that was the only place the friendship could be seen.
“Since you’re obviously not with Seth, would you care to dance?” he stood facing her, palm up and a lopsided smirk on his lips. She almost looked to Seth but then thought ‘I really didn’t come with him... but it wouldn’t hurt to see what happens’....
