Walking well-trodden paths, I meet and greet, but cause offence; Marked as odd for wearing a smile, While everyone is wearing a mask.
Waiting for the four twenty-two train, Where no one’s eyes dare meet; Where all are plugged into their MP3, And don their finest firewalls.
What a pattern we make on the train, No one sits next to each other; Some would rather block the doors Than ask if the seat is taken.
On purpose, I will ask and take my seat And smile as I engage in topical chat; But it all becomes short-lived, As you keenly retract into your shells.
Standing at the bar, whiskey in hand, No one will ask who I am; A stranger not allowed to talk or look, I pay the tender and just take my leave.
I want for someone to knock my door, With no sales, political or religious pitches; Just to say, Hello Arthur, get the kettle on And talk of anything and everything.
The only friends I seem to have, Are created at the touch of my keyboard; And the only time I’m understood, Is when you read what I’ve just written.

Sad but very true. The amount of times I have smiled at a passing stranger, even a friend from the past maybe and been rewarded with a cold stare or a dirty look. Smiling costs nothing, neither does a friendly word. It never ceases to amaze how awful people can be sometimes. I love this pice Arthur, though it just speaks volumes of the cold society we live in. Keep smiling my friend .... Kerry xxx ;D

You're not alone, my friend. The sad fact is that everyone seems coccooned inside their own little worlds nowadays, suspicious and distrusting of others. I'm glad for the amity and goodwill we lend each other here, especially in this time of "Swine Flu" worries. A very telling write you give us here, deep with emotion and power. *exalt*

I've also written about this, Arthur. Sadly, it's a growing world-wide trend (not so prevelant here, yet) and, if not an mp3 blocking ears, it's cell phones, portable laptop's and dead eyes ~ anything to isolate them from people. Welcome door-knocks and phone calls become less frequent, while fewer people go 'out' to enjoy themselves. I often hear people discussing their great partner relationships: on the i'net, FGS! What ever happened to physical dating? You need never feel alone - always amongst friends; be we near or across the globe. Good topical subject and I like your phrasing, word-choices and the whole write. Exalt. H x
