Well you have me to back you up now Jamie. And I know the rest of the staff has your back. I think it's still going ok now that it's open to the public. Not really seen any big problems. But maybe I've missed it. I think you're doing a great job, sweetie. Hang in there, this will pass.

Hey Jamie I was wondering if you would entertain the idea of a Politics board in poetic endeavors? Where members can post political or 'punk' poetry that is influenced by obviously politics but also community, society and other such things that alot of poets write about? Hope you take this into consideration because I don't really want to flood the unplugged board with such matters and Despair seems an illogical place to post them...?

Well, I understand where you're coming from, Jay, but I have no qualms about banning people if they cause trouble, and if it gets like that I will make it private again. But just until we grow a little I'd like to give it a chance. So we can maybe meet a few new people. I dunno. I hate being the boss of anything, really. Decisions are not my forte. I agree that a new site must be open at least for the time it takes for building a membership but if I may ask you Jamie do you have a maximum number of members in mind? Why I ask is that I feel the TPS is somewhat a victim of its own success, i.e. it has so many members that it has got to the stage where it is getting increasingly difficult to manage. I sense that there is a constant turnover of moderators there, and no wonder considering the stress they are put under. After two years as a member on TPS I would love to see the rule on comments to be made much more stringent and enforced, there are far too many freeloaders who make the Mods workload near to unmanageable on some boards. My pet grouse is bumpers who use ‘thank you’ just to promote their own work. If I ran a poetry site one rule I would make would be an absolute maximum set for two and only two replies to a members own post. I don’t make these comments as a criticism of TPS, it’s just being aware of some of the problems poetry sites run into and trying to make sure we don’t repeat them. Regards Cari

Is that why people write those thank you posts? I thought I had gone past being naive; but apparently not. I thought they were being polite. I thought I was a cynic; but I am still an innocent.

You are far too intelligent to be that naïve. Yes a few are just being courteous but even new members quickly come to realise that that by posting on their own work it promotes their poetry to the top of the page where they think it will stand more chance of receiving a comment. I have seen as many as seven Thank You posts to as little as three comments; even if that member was polite to the extent of being sycophantic I think you would agree that it’s just a smidgen over the top.
Its not just a case of it being merely annoying, on fast moving boards it removes other work off the page, some that have been barely posted there for a day. Whether innocent of any ulterior motive or not, the effect is the same. That’s not being courteous in fact it is being discourteous to your fellow members. Why not group your replies to comments you receive in a single post when your poem is unlikely to get any more comments?, or if you wish to correspond with another member to use the personal email facility. The boards are surely there for posting new work on, not for seeking to promote your own work to get an advantage over you’re fellow members. I am not suggesting that it is anyway an issue on this site but that it is certainly getting to be one on TPS. A couple of weeks ago I clicked on a board on TPS and found that out of the first eight entries six were Thank You posts. I not for one moment suggesting that anyone should not reply to comments they receive, of course not. But there are more responsible ways available to register you’re thanks and appreciation.

You are perfectly correct, Carousel. There is a middle way. But as yet, the type of abuse you describe has not manifested itself here. As yet.

That's a good suggestion, carousal. The warning system set up in the TOS is there for a reason. Gradiated steps that lead to banning, listing specific offenses. I'll look at the steps to make sure that's covered. (We learn as we grow, you know?) If we get slammed with new members who start bumping their own posts abusively, rest assured the staff will let me know and Stacy or I will bring down the Fist of God. I have no qualms about banning members who abuse this site. This is a fellowship. Conduct unbecoming of that fellowship atmosphere will be summarily dismissed. It's that simple. After all, it's impossible to grow flowers in a hailstorm.

I made a suggestion on the other board regarding the 3 to 1 rule, it was that besides all the work Mods have to do to check members are keeping up their reply qouta it might help boost replies if there was a monthly award for the best replier or most prolific replier whatever. Probably best done by nominations and votes. Something for the future perhaps.

I am on a fishing forum. Every time someone replies to a thread i have started I get an email with a link to send me straight to it, very handy. Probably not technicaly possible though.
