I have talked with Jamie, and I just wanted to let everyone know that after much thought, discussion, and consideration, I am in the process of creating a members challenge board for PoetShare. I have no idea when it will be up and running, but I hope to have it up and running very soon. I will continue to talk with Jamie and see what he thinks and we'll both continue on from there. Jamie will have the ultimate say as to when/if this board is started. We both feel that we need to give it a little bit more time, but I still wanted to share my ideas with all of you.
There are a million and one ideas for the board running around in my head, and right now, I'm just trying to jot things down, get creative a bit, and see what I can come up with. At this time, I don't think I'm going to make it an open hosting challenge board for the first few months to test the waters and see what kind of reception the board receives by the members of PoetShare. And I hope that it is warmly received and goes smoothly so that Jamie and I can open it up to members who wish to host their own challenges. I want to host a monthly challenge titled "PoetShare Poetic Pen Award" where you, the writer, enter what you feel to be your absolute best poetic piece.
I'm still playing around with that idea, and so I don't really know which way it will go at this point, but that is the plan I have in mind at this time. I am currently checking in at local trophy shops, etc, on a ribbon that I can have made up with "PoetShare Poetic Pen Award" on it, along with the month and year the award was presented. Or I can make an award graphic that has your username on it, the month it was won, and the title of the winning entry, upload it in a private list at photobucket, then send the graphic URL to the winner that particular month. If I go with this latter option, I will upload the graphic twice, once with avatar dimensions, and the second one with a larger, more printer friendly quality so that you can print it out if you're the winner. As I said, so many ideas running around inside this tiny little brain of mine, lol.
What do you think of that? Does that sound like an interesting idea? If it's too over the top, then let me know. As I have already said, I'm just letting the creative juices flow and see what kind of interesting things I can come up with for the member challenge board. Input/Suggestions anyone? Thoughts or feedback? I'm all ears. This is a writing community filled with friendship and love, so if there is something that you would like to see, etc, please share your ideas and suggestions. PoetShare wouldn't be what it is today without Jamie and his loving heart and each one of you who write from your hearts and share with us all here. You are what PoetShare is all about.
Hugs~~~ Stacy

I THINK IT IS A GREAT IDEA!! I would support this to the highest degree.. I am hosting a contest at TPS and it is great to see what people come up with.. I think others would agree.. however, I don't like the idea of a username, month, and whatever on the award.. maybe the month.. but, don't stress out over it.. just an award and the month and a list of winners should be sufficient.. I also think it is very important to post the winning poem.. that is what is missing from the other sites.. because I have won two awards and those poems are now gone.. I could have printed them but, nobody else can see them either.. kind of a bummer.. anyway there is my two cents and I hope it helped in some small way.. be well all..

I think it's a wonderful idea and what Stacy has in mind for you all is spectacular. Stacy also posted this on the blog if anyone hasn't checked it out yet. As for displaying winning poems, DON'T FORGET TO PM NOMINATIONS FOR THE FEATURED POEM to me or Stacy, folks. One gets picked every week and comes with 5 exalts and a week on the front page. Check out the rules, contests, TOS, etc. God I sound like a freaking advertisement.

at Jamie. Joel I'm soooo glad to hear your feedback on this one. I was worried that nobody would be interested. And I talked with Jamie earlier and I think I'm just going to get some ribbons printed up with the title of the challenge on it... "PoetShare Poetic Pen Award". Then I can create a file of the winning poems from month to month in the file area, and also post the winning poems for that month. I'm just afraid if I leave the poem up when the next months winner is announced, it will take away from the spotlight for that winner. See what I mean? And if it's in a separate thread, with each winning poem in there, then people can access them easier. I think one of the things I'm going to ask in the challenge is mandate that each poem entered also be posted in a board such as love, spirit, despair, etc. Might be easier to find that way. I don't know. There's still some bugs that need worked out, but I was kind of shooting for the 1st of August to start it officially. We'll see, and once I know for sure, I'll let you all know. Stacy, I love the idea but as I told Jamie from the start of PoetShare, we can NOT be another TPS. We have to stand on our own. PoetShare needs to do things TPS does not do, not what TPS has found successful.
A members challenge board would be a very very bad idea unless you can figure out a way to do it in a way completely different than TPS.
We must be original, the joke thread, the recipe thread, all this has PoetShare written all over it. We need more things like that.
We can follow Amy to a point, but to do a members challenge board AND a weekly challenge board is too much. After all, this is PoetShare, not TPS-2
just my take on this, throw it away if you don't agree.

No I totally agree. I was just telling Jamie to be different (cause the whole challenge thing was too copy cat for me) that we would just leave the "PoetShare Poetic Pen Award" in the Thursday morning prompt section so that it could stand on it's own and just leave it at that. Does that make sense? Cause the last thing any of us wanna do is be cliched and copy others who've walked before us. This way, by doing that, we're being different, and yet still creative allowing growth. ***Biting fingernails*** Now I'm off for a late supper. Be back in a little while. Peace

And Daniel, I would never throw it out. Everyone around here has a voice that needs heard. No idea is a bad idea, and there would be no growth without feedback.

why don't you start a thread "original ideas for PoetShare that you would like to see us do?"
it could be like "Do you have an idea for PoetShare that you have never seen another poet forum do? We want to hear from you.."
I think that many of us have ideas that just need to be heard.
Remember, Amy does check out other sites to see how close they resemble hers.

I realize you all have ideas. That's why I asked for feedback in the original post. We need to hear ideas, suggestions, feedback, etc. Nobody wants to be compared to TPS, nor do we want to take away from the beauty of TPS. Jamie and I both have said time and time again that we don't want to take anything away from TPS.

sorry Stacy,
your on the game tonight! I think I lost that paragraph inside the rest of the original.
something that Foggy and I used to talk about a long time ago.. Whoever wins last weeks' weekly challenge should be allowed to create the next weekly challenge. I never thought keeping all the good things for just admin was a great idea (although I am admin) because as regular members, we like to feel as we are a part of the site too.
I know, as it is now PoetShare doesn't have a weekly challenge winner.. but there should be some way that we can let the members decide the challenges as a reward.
also.. and this is weird.. howabout a "Worst poem I can write" forum?
just two for now.. more later I'm sure once I'm awake..

I really like the challenge idea. I will talk with Jamie and see what he thinks about that and maybe get something up on that front. Sounds really cool to me. But we'll have to wait and see. I want feedback, Feedback, FEEDBACK! I want to take your ideas, and come up with things from those ideas, and put them out there on the forum for all of YOU!!! What will be fun, creative, different, things like that. And I know Jamie echoes my sentiments. And I'm so glad you're not mad at me. I thought maybe I stepped on toes, lol. But it's all good. Now go get woke up, go back to sleep, do whatever it is that Daniel needs to do to be the best Daniel he can be. I'm off to have a cold beer. Hugs~~~ Stacy

Some points here:
1) I put up a Suggestion Box thread on day one. It's open to all suggestions and I've been practically begging folks to use it. Anybody's got suggestions for the site, by all means, let's hear them!! All ideas are valued and seriously considered.
2) I'm getting rid of the Critique board because it feels like an echo of TPS and no one uses it anyway.
3) I have deliberately not imitated the categories at TPS as much as possible to avoid the very thing you're referring to Daniel. And we do not vote nor give awards for the weekly special, (not challenge). I have consistently referred to it as a "special" or a "prompt" precisely because I don't want it to have the competitive nature that the TPS challenge presents. We don't have a competition, it's a writing prompt, and I try to make them so they stretch the writing abilities of members who participate. That's the sole purpose of that board and I truly feel that it's completely different from TPS in that respect. Perhaps I should move it to the bottom of the front page? I dunno.
4) I think Stacy's idea is a good one but we haven't decided upon how to work it just yet. It won't be a copy of TPS, nor should it be. But allowing the members to engage each other independently with poetic challenges remains a good idea.

Stacy...
I love the challenge board as well, but as everyone has mentioned, we have to make the idea unique and form it into our own...I will think up some ideas...Ew...I can feel the ideas brewing already...I need another Iced tea...I'll be back!

Well if you want my two penny worth, a competiton is a competition and is not the sole right of any poetic society. You can call it by another name and its still a competition. I love competitions its a great way to get inspiration writing about something you would have never considered in a million years. I dont like the current system on TPS regarding the weekly challenge, during a months ban from winning after a previous win is always when you write your best poem! Neither do I like an admin member choosing the top five even if its Daniel lol. I think perhaps the member who wins one week should choose the next weeks subject and judge it. Hmmmm i can see all sorts of problems with that! I do like it when members can host challenges, it has produced some amazing graphic awards and some unusual subjects. Unfortunately the TPS comps are suffering from too many monthly competitions going unjudged for long periods! this is very frustrating and an insult to those who gave their time to enter. Members who host challenges should not do so unless they mean to follow it through. Regarding winners poems being displayed you are right not to display them within the competition unless its just last months, a simple list of winners, the poems title and a link to wherever it may be is sufficient. As for awards a simple graphic can be very rewarding I know I treasure mine, but a printable certificate is also a great idea. Just avoid things you have to post, it could get expensive having to send bronze statues to oogistanbulawa. I also think the longer you leave this the better, the weekly prompt is hardly jammed with entries, it needs a fairly large member base to make the competitions exciting and challenging in my opinion. Im sorry I cant come up with any original ideas regarding how to go about this but I am sure if you try different things and they dont work to well that the members will understand.
Kindest regards Doc

I totally agree, doc. There hasn't been a huge response to the Thursday morning poetry prompt. And that makes me very sad. I think that waiting will be a good thing for the moment. At least you all know what I would like to do. And I will do it, but I would like to see more responses in the Thursday morning poetry prompt first. I guess everyone must be sleeping or they're at a loss for the prompt ideas, I dunno. I still have so many ideas running around and so many that I need to sort through, cause as you said doc, postage could get really expensive if I went to sending things through the mail. If you, or anyone else for that matter, has any ideas as to how we can stimulate responses to the poetry prompt, then by all means, I know the entire staff would love to hear them. The admin team has especially been racking their brains really hard to try and come up with ideas and we all would love to see a greater response. I thank you for your feedback, doc. It's greatly appreciated, and please know your suggestions have been heard and taken to heart. Love and Hugs~~~ Stacamia
