damn new members who believe their poetry needs to be read by everyone and refuse to return the favor..
it's not fair that we have too allow them this right. They know good and well they have to reply to others as it says it in every screen they open but they are so damn thick headed and full of their own selves they can't see past the "ooh, everyone has to read me"..
Oooh, this is NOT about PoetShare. I'm just bitching about a new member at TPS who joined tonight with 5 new poems for us all to enjoy.
and one of them only had two lines and even a redneck looken for love at a family reunion wouldn't call it a poem.
it's no wonder our moderators get so upset. We are helpless but to watch as so many idiots join, give us their work, get offended that they may have to read someone elses, and leave only to be replaced by the next idiot.
where's that punching bag?

I agree that some offend on purpose, but some will find offense in honesty if the subject is dear to them. I'm sure I offended some friends tonight, but I think sometimes a little perspective is needed. After reading hundreds of poems that bash the USA, I'm a little shocked at the vitriol cast around when the country's name is changed.

damn computer that wants to install new software right in the middle of something and shuts me down..
darn Microsoft fixing to introduce yet the latest version of Windows, #7, on October 22nd, yet their add says it's "the best yet" and it shows a little 5 year old girl using it.. That is over two week's away, how did that little girl get the program this early? Is her dad high up in Microsoft? Who says it's the best yet? Why don't they just keep pushing the damn program they sold me? Vista.. I"m still trying to figure out how to do things this little five year old girl can do in the commercials.. Why dint' they hire her as tech. support, when I call for any questions, after I take the survey, I usually get some guy who I believe English is his third language.
Why can't my boss be fair for once in her life. She knows never ever giving me a weekend off is wrong yet she doesn't loose any sleep over it.
there.. now I feel better..

Jamie, I know your referring to the incident on TPS where a new member upload a particularly offensive poem denigrating the youth of Britain as being knife wielding thugs. There is in my opinion a world of difference in criticizing any countries political policies, i am a well known Bush basher, but also never hold back on criticizing my own countries prime minister. thats because they are in public office and therefore legitimate targets. But to smear the youth of an entire nation as knife wielding thugs is little short of racism. It seem that values are somewhat confused when a poem can be removed for using the word POO, probably one of the first words any child uses and understands and yet a poem can be filled with lies and half truths, denigrate the entire youth of a country, and advise tourists not to go there and remain on view on the grounds of "Artistic merit" or "Fair social comment". The particular poem in question was in my opinion racist and should have been instantly removed.

Daniel, Regarding poets replying to others it amazes me that given a computers ideal occupation is counting things that it is beyond the realms of programmers to make the 3:1 rule an automatic process! Surely if a poet has uploaded x amount of poems and only y amount of replies the program could disallow further uploads of poems until back in credit.? This may require a special tag to differentiate between poem and reply.

yes, I'm sure something like that could be programmed however we can't because, for reasons not mine to judge, the 3/1 ratio is only a recommendation and not a rule. Still without it any site would just be a place to unload poems that no one ever comments on.
however, as I said, I am not judging the fact it is not a rule. There are still options we can do for those who do not follow the recommendation too, from pull their poetry off the site till they make an attempt to catch up too ban them from the site for a set number of days..
The frustrating thing, for me, is how it upsets our Moderators to have to deal with people like this day after day. They all work so hard and on their own time and so many idiots join the site just to show us that they are the best writers in the world and we should be honored to read their work however hell will freeze over before they read ours.
What can I say to the Moderator who gets sick of these people? The Moderator who themselves has a 60/1 ration for their own poetry.. These Moderators make the site run and I feel like I, myself personally, let them down when I can only reply back to them "Log it in records and we will keep an eye on them. Send them a pm and hopefully they will get the hint".
but, as I said.. I'm not judging the fact it's not a rule. I'm just dealing with the effects of not being able to enforce a recommendation.

As soon as I read that poem I did the typical Kerry thing and responded like I did. I'm the first to bash Bush but not USA in general, how could I do that when I don't live there? AnywayI love the USA. .... To be honest I'm past caring now ... I had my say, took Jamies advice and wrote a proper reply to the poem which called it fiction ... and sent Voj a pm, hehe. As for the 3:1 ratio, it pisses me off no end Foggy that is SUCH a great idea .... but I fail to see how if it's not a solid rule we can then go ahead and give them a percentage warning for not sticking to it .... what not sticking to a rule that ISN'T a rule? ? The rules need to be changed as far as I'm concerned, that site is big enough now to get rid of the members who are selfish in MY opinion .... it's either a rule or it isn't. It should be stated THREE IN ONE HAS TO BE ABIDED BY OR ELSE ... god that would save SO MUCH hassle ...... sigh ... end of rant K x

Daniel, How many times have i heard "We cant do anything because its not in the rules" Presumably someone makes the rules? so make some more! I presume it doesn't need senate approval to make a rule on a private site. The issue of inadequate replies has been a thorn in everyones sides since I joined and presumably before that. so its time to kick ass. Why is it only a recommendation for instance? make it compulsory. Ask members to join a scheme in each area to go round to offenders home and daub slogans on their house such as "No replier your pants are on fire" Have a notice board to name and shame them. Then there is the carrot approach, a monthly prize of ten exalts for the person making the most significant replies (Not necessarily the most). With similar rules to the TPS challenge where you can only win it once every 4 weeks or so. These sites are privately run and can make whatever rules they wish. Get more pro active.

unfort. we can't give percentage warnings for 3/1 ratio.. we can give it for flaming and fighting or badmouthing staff but not because they didn't reply to others. Our only options for not replying is #1- send them a warning, record in log..#2- send more warnings.. #3- if they still keep posting, we can remove their latest poems into records and #4- if this doesn't stop them, we have the right to ban them from the site for a set amount of days.
sigh..

Daniel, How many times have i heard "We cant do anything because its not in the rules" Presumably someone makes the rules. as a private site, the rules are made by only one person (not me) and she knows everyones feelings on this issue. All my rights give me is the option of leaving TPS and going somewhere else where this rule is enforced but you know something? I love TPS too much to leave it. It has given me friendships I would have never had, and value more than any I've ever had before. I can't change what is not mine to change.

But to smear the youth of an entire nation as knife wielding thugs is little short of racism. Bill, please don't take this personally but I think you really need to reread that poem again, with a critical literary eye looking at the details. The title says "Ununited" kingdom, and the first line says "A market town." To me, that clearly indicates that "every youth a village fool" is talking about the youth in his own hometown, which is part of what the author feels is an ununited kingdom. The rest naturally refers back to that initial setting of his town. Though the final line does say sarcastically, "Come visit the UK," the logical assumption is that the author is pointing out that not all of the UK is as rosy as it's painted to be, based on his experience. If I can respond to this, unfortunately it would require major encoding in the basic Proboards application itself. And they can't even get the search function to work reliably. *shrug* Would be nice, though. If they ever release Version 5 (hopefully soon) maybe we can do something about that. Oh, how I would love to do something like that. Problem is that people would complain about favoritism, how "significant" was judged, etc. Unfortunate, but true. Great idea, though, Foggy.

Jamie, please don't take this personally but I think you really need to reread that poem again it cleary says Its any where!
A freshly bloodied kitchen knife Its any where On any day Come holiday in the uk
That to me doesnt mean just in a few locations, it means all over. Funny how in 61 years i have yet to see anyone wielding a kitchen knife.

I do feel that this is a poem that has blatantly slurred the english youth, my son is one as is my stepson and daughter who are not fools and if the poet opened his eyes properly and gave the kids in his area half a chance then he just may find himself wrong.
Even his reply to our reactions has a tinge of glee at causing such a stir.
Its the final line that drives decent people mad....there is nothing wrong with the uk, its not the sespool he portrays.
but besides that he mars every young person a knife yielding yob and come to the uk like its a zoo full of feral animals.
I am bitterly disappointed at the TPS stance, Why stop there, why not let him write a poem inferring all irish kids as horsethieves, drunkards and jailbirds.
Or American kids as crack smokin gangsters.
He should have kept it to his town and not leave himself open to this wrath by implying that the UK is worth visiting on that basis

Or perhaps that all Muslim kids carry bombs. This to me was clearly a racist upoload even if the guy comes from Britain. He obviously doesnt travel much if he thinks the particular sesspool he lives in is repeated in ANY town. TPS does have a rule on racism i beleive so it should be applied instantly.

You know, SE's british and agrees with me entirely. Your perspective is not the only perspective, my friends. It's a poem, not a debate thread. If you don't agree with someone's opinion of their hometown or homeland, then you are not bound to comment on it. You are bound to be polite about it and not attack the messenger if you don't like their message. Were it a debate thread that would be one thing. It's a poem. ALL poetry is bound up in opinions, and if we removed all the poems that someone found offensive then the boards would be empty.
The fact that you continue to try and compare it to racism brings my blood to a boil. RACE has absolutely nothing to do with it. Someone who has had a different life experience than you and has a different perspective and is not happy with their country has just as much right to express their opinions and feelings in a poem as you all do. That right doesn't disappear just because it happens to be a subject that matters to you. Who cares if they are talking about the entire country. It's not a factual presentation, a talking points memo, a debate agenda, a press release, etc. It's a POEM. You have just as much right to write a poem that paints the UK as Heaven on earth with beautiful sex kittens on every corner where no one ever wants or needs and everyone is blessed and happy. That would be just as untruthful I'm sure, but though the that poems reception might be nicer, its validity would remain the same.
You sound like the Republicans that tried to shut up all debate over the Patriot Act by calling the dissenters Unamerican. "That's not my country, that's not my America!" Well, yes, it is, you just haven't seen it the same way as everyone else. Doesn't make the viewpoint any more or less valid.
